WEEKLY BURMA SUMMARY

Karenni Rangers treat injured resistance soldiers from the battle in Baw Lake. 

Ranger Teams Support Casualties Across Burma 

Fighting between the Burma Army and resistance forces continues around Burma, leaving Rangers to serve many casualties. Civilians also continue to either be caught in the crossfire or intentionally targeted by the Burma Army. In southern Karen State, the Burma Army launched five drone bombs and fired 81mm and 120mm mortar rounds into a village fully occupied by civilians, killing one villager. 

NORTHERN KAREN STATE

During the past week, ongoing conflict in northern Karen State has resulted in the death of one KNLA soldier and the injury of three Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) soldiers as well as one civilian.


In Taw Oo District, the Burma Army fired six 120mm shells on Mar. 13, 2025, in Htaw Ta Hto Township, resulting in the destruction of a house; however, no casualties were reported. 


In Kler Lwe Htoo District, soldiers and equipment have been mobilized and shelling by the Burma military resulted in the injury of one girl. On Mar. 13, 2025, in Ler Doh Township, 50 Burma Army soldiers were mobilized, reportedly with the intention to re-take areas under PDF control. Three days later in Hsaw Htee Township, the Burma military’s Infantry Battalion (IB) 264 fired three rounds of howitzers, causing a mild injury to a 13-year-old girl. On Mar. 17, 2025, one Burma military bulldozer was mobilized to the Ler Doh-Mone Township border, apparently with the intention of rebuilding the Mu Thae Road, while in Hsaw Htee Township, a Burma military jet dropped two bombs, followed by six rounds of howitzers by IB 264. No casualties or building damages were reported in this location.


Continued fighting in Dwelo Township in Mutraw District resulted in the death of one KNLA soldier and the injury of another three. Fighting between the KNLA and Burma Army soldiers on Mar. 13, 2025, resulted in the injury of two KNLA soldiers. Two days later, the Burma military fired 120mm shells, killing one KNLA soldier and injuring another one. 

CENTRAL KAREN STATE

The Burma Army launched nine drone bombs in Doo Tha Htoo District, resulting in seven casualties, both KNLA and civilian. Separately, the KNLA seized Pulutu camp in Hpa-an District from the Burma Army, resulting in casualties on both sides.


In Doo Tha Htoo District, Kyaikto Township, the Burma Army dropped six bombs with a drone at Alu Lay and Alu Gyi villages on Mar. 10, killing one KNLA soldier and injuring another. On Mar. 12, IB 207 dropped two drone bombs on the Dhamma Sutra Swimming Pool in Toung Gwa Village, injuring two people. The Burma Army Artillery Battalion 310 launched a drone bomb in Khayawe Village on Mar. 13, injuring three civilians, whom Rangers were able to treat. Additionally, Burma Army soldiers attacked the Naga Phyu Regiment and FBR team with a drone bomb near Mae Yon Gyi Village on Mar. 15, burning the fields but resulting in no casualties.


In Hpa-an District, KNLA soldiers attacked and seized the Burma Army’s Pulutu Camp on Mar. 14, resulting in three KNLA killed, 10 injured and five Burma Army killed. Additionally, 15 Burma Army soldiers fled into Thailand with their weapons. 

SOUTHERN KAREN STATE

On Mar. 16, in Chaung Lamu Village, Mergui Tavoy District, the Burma Army launched five drone bombs and fired 81mm and 120mm mortar rounds into a village fully occupied by civilians, killing one villager. As a result, 4,000 occupants of Chaung Lamu Village and 300 IDPs originally from Thein Khao Village fled to surrounding areas to avoid additional Burma military strikes.

KARENNI STATE

Weekly 19-03-25

Rangers treat injured resistance soldiers from the battle in Baw Lake. 

On Mar. 11, combined troops of Karenni Army, Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF) and other resistance groups attacked a Burma Army post in Baw Lake Town, Karenni State, where 50 Burma military soldiers were operating. The Burma military responded with airstrikes, using three jets, mortars, M-79 grenade launchers and drones. After the fighting, the resistance groups captured six Burma military soldiers and some ammunition. The armed clash killed two Burma military soldiers and one pro-democracy soldier, and additional resistance soldiers were injured. A 120mm mortar wounded one Karenni Ranger. 21 Rangers were on the scene to treat the wounded.

SOUTHERN SHAN STATE

Burma Army invaded and attacked MoeBye Town with drones and mortars, killing two resistance soldiers. Rangers provided tarpaulins to over 1,700 IDPs in Lwal Yin IDP camp.


Burma Army attacked MoeBye Town with drones and mortars on March 12, killing one Karen National Liberation Army soldier and injuring another one. On March 14, Burma military troops from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 422 attempted to capture the positions of KNDF and other allies in MoeBye Town. After 5 hours of fighting, Burma military retreated. Resistance soldiers captured one Burma military soldier and got some ammunition. During the attack, Burma military 120mm mortars killed one KNDF soldier and another three were wounded. Phekhon Rangers were on the frontline and treated the wounded. Karenni Rangers gave 50 tarpaulins to 1750 IDP in Lwal Yin IDP camp in Phekhon Township on March 15 where a former Karenni Ranger is in charge of the IDP camp.

CHIN STATE

In Falam township, Chin State, fighting broke out between soldiers in a Burma military base and the Chin Brotherhood (CB) in Falam town on Mar. 12. During the armed clash, Burma military used Y-12 aircraft and MIG-19 fighter jets to fight against the resistance groups. On Mar. 13, between 0036 – 0106 hours, Burma military jets dropped 29 bombs, and four more bombs were dropped at 1149. Additionally, another six Burma military jets attacked Falam town later that afternoon. New medics trained by Rangers saved one resistance soldier’s life by applying a chest seal.
