Rangers work to distribute sacks of rice to IDPs in Dooplaya District.

Civilians Across Northern Karen State Attacked by Burma Army

Rangers work to help and provide medical care after heavy attacks by the Burma military against civilians in northern Karen State. In central Karen State, Rangers provide food to IDPs. 

NORTHERN KAREN STATE

Burma military mortars and airstrikes injure civilians across northern Karen State. 


In Kler Lwee Htoo District, on Apr. 7 at approximately 1530 hours, a storm destroyed two houses and a school in Htet Htu Village. The morning of Apr. 11, the Burma Army used drones to drop bombs on a People’s Defence Force (PDF) camp. One soldier, Saw Kwa Lay, was injured on his ankle. Some buildings were also destroyed by the attack.


On Apr. 13, an FBR team in Kler Lwee Htoo District helped move the belongings of some IDPs in Za Lok Gyi and Shansuu villages (Hsaw Htee Township, Kler Lwee Htoo District). There were 45 families (246 people total) that fled due to fighting  between Burma Army and PDF soldiers in the region. More families are expected to be displaced as the battle continues.


In Taw Oo District, on Apr. 10 at approximately 1435 hours, Burma Army Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 604 from Tandaunggy Bayintnaung Base and New Tan Taung launched mortars around Oakshat Pin Village. Four mortars exploded, killing one of the villagers and injuring two others while they were riding their motorcycle. Both of the injured were transported to Taungoo General Hospital and are in critical condition. 

 

On Apr. 11, two Burma military jet fighters conducted four airstrikes on a village in Yedashe Township (Taw Oo District). One villager, Wei Lu (29 years old) was killed. His 60-year-old mother was also injured. This family had been displaced from their village, Pa Douk Kone, since last year. 


In Mu Traw District on Apr. 8, at approximately 1725 hours, a Burma military jet dropped two bombs on the village of Bler Gaw (Lu Thaw Township, Mu Traw District). Two homes were destroyed. A father and son hiding inside one of the houses were both injured. 


On Apr. 10 at approximately 0630 hours, a Burma military Y-12 aircraft dropped a bomb on Pa Pun Ta Ba Jaw Village. A PDF soldier was injured on the right side of his chest from the blast. Later that day at approximately 1430 hours, the Burma Army launched a mortar onto PDF soldiers in the city of Hpapun. A villager from Htee Hsell Ni Village who was helping cook for these soldiers was hit by shrapnel on the left side of his back.


On Apr. 10, a Burma military Y-12 dropped bombs on Toe Thay Pun Village (Lu Thaw Township, Mu Traw District) while an FBR team was checking on the village. A monastery was damaged by the attack. In the same village on Apr. 12, at approximately 0715 hours, a Burma military Y-12 dropped five bombs near Toe Thay Pun Village (Lu Thaw Township, Mu Traw District). No one was injured from the attack.

CENTRAL KAREN STATE

In Doo Tha Htoo District, on Apr. 11 at 1100, the Burma Army fired one 120mm mortar, causing structural damage to one house. Later that day, while a Ranger was reporting on the situation, a second mortar hit the same building. However, no casualties were reported in any of the attacks.


In Dooplaya District, a FBR team continued distributing rice to IDPs, this week distributing 452 rice sacks to IDPs in need.

SOUTHERN KAREN STATE

Rangers welcome the Burma Army deserters.

On April 11, two Burma military deserters surrendered to Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) Battalion 11 in Tanorthari Township. Rangers interviewed the two deserters on Apr. 12, learning of their motivations for leaving the Burma Army and the challenges they and their families could face after their decision.
