The Burma Army Levels Village Amidst Battlefield Setbacks: Burma Army Attack Report in Northern Burma, March 2023
24 April 2023
Kachin State, Northern Shan State, and Sagaing Division, Burma
The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) reported a total of 94 military clashes during the month of March 2023 in Kachin State, northern Shan State, and Sagaing Division, Burma, due to the Burma Army’s presence in this region. The amount of overall activity decreased from the previous month’s 116 clashes.
In March, the Burma Army engaged in fighting with Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) in their territory 66 times, which included 30 armed clashes, 7 air/drone strikes, 15 artillery/mortar shellings, and 14 mine explosions. While the Burma Army is still very active in EAO territory in northern Burma, the reports reveal a consistent trend of failure by the Burma Army to assert control as evidenced by their inability to secure their own bases of support and to press the offensive against EAO strongholds.
Apart from the 66 military related incidents, the KIA recorded a total of 15 human rights abuses committed by Burma Army soldiers this month, including murdering civilians, burning property, extorting money, and abducting dozens of civilians. Of significance, the Burma Army reportedly burned Man Wing (also known as Man Wein) Village in Shwegu Township, Kachin State, in the aftermath of fighting with the KIA and People’s Defense Forces (PDF). The burning event can be corroborated through Sentinel 2 and NASA FIRMS remote sensing programs.
