WEEKLY BURMA SUMMARY

Earthquake Recovery Does Not Deter Burma Army Attacks

Cleanup from the Mar. 28 earthquake continues around Burma. Even after announcing a ceasefire to allow for earthquake relief efforts, the Burma Army has not ceased attacks on resistance forces and civilians. In fact, attacks reported have increased from last week, most dramatically in Karenni and southern Shan states. 

NORTHERN KAREN STATE

Northern Karen State suffered airstrikes and other attacks from the Burma military while recovering from last week’s earthquake.  


In Taw Oo District, the Burma Army attacked multiple villages with airstrikes and soldiers on the ground. On Mar. 16, in An Myoung Village, the Burma Army arrested and killed U Aye Win while he was on his way home from the market. In the same village, the Burma Army shot Zin Min Htet and his father. Zin Min Htet was taken to the hospital for treatment but his father died.


On Mar. 27, the Burma Army conducted an airstrike on Tsei Myaung Village and two houses were destroyed. On Mar. 31, the 48th Battalion of the Burma Army (based at Sittaung River Bridge Base Camp) burned down three houses in Myo Soe Village. No injuries were reported.


On Apr. 2, in Mu Traw District, a Burma Army unit based in Pla Kho fired two 60mm mortars into a rice field in Saw Mu Plaw Village. Only one of the mortars exploded and no one was injured in the blast.


Later that afternoon, a Burma military jet dropped a bomb on Nay Ka Village, leading to the deaths of 3-month-old Saw Aung Mya Oon and Naw Wah She Paw. Three others were injured and were transported to Hpapu for further treatment and care. 


In Kler Lwee Htoo District, on Apr. 5 at approximately 1532 hours, Burma Army Infantry Battalion (IB) 264 launched rockets into Pyi Yin Gai Village. A school was destroyed and three villagers were injured: Nay Linn Soe, Ma Ya Ta Na Oo, and Ko Thet Nay Win. 

CENTRAL KAREN STATE

This week in central Karen State, FBR teams have continued distributing food, medicine, and hope to those in need.


On Apr. 1 in Dooplaya District, Burma Army Operations Command 12 fired five 120mm mortars into a village in Kruh Teh Township, killing one civilian. Meanwhile, in Win Yay Township, an FBR team distributed around 350 rice sacks to IDPs in need.


In Hpa An District, an FBR team conducted a GLC program and medical clinic for 264 IDPs in Lu Pleh Township, treating and providing medicine for a total of 43 patients, as well as donating equipment to the local church.

SOUTHERN KAREN STATE

On Apr. 1, in Kyein Choung Village, Tanorthari Township, Rangers helped evacuate a villager who had suffered a stroke, carrying them to a truck and driving them to the nearest clinic. On Apr. 3 in the same township, six Burma military soldiers from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 17 in P’Law City deserted, offering themselves to Karen National Liberation Army Brigade 11. 

KARENNI STATE

The Burma military launched airstrikes against government and civilian targets in Karenni State.


On Mar. 30 at 1600, a Burma military jet fighter dropped bombs in the vicinity of Pruso. One person was wounded. Bombs were also dropped near Sagaing Division. 


On Mar. 28 to Apr. 2, Karenni Joint Command (JCS) reported they captured six Burma outposts. On Apr. 2, near Nan Phe Village, the Burma military dropped two 500lb bombs on a checkpoint of the Karenni Interim Executive Council, (IEC) on the way to Htoo River. Four were wounded and two were killed. 

SOUTHERN SHAN STATE

An FBR friend is killed by Burma military airstrikes while trying to help casualties on the front lines. Other airstrikes across southern Shan kill four more and wound two others. 


On Apr. 4 at 1130 in southern Shan State, Moebye Township, Burma Army LIB 422 fired four 120mm mortar rounds into Pi King Kaw Khu Village, killing a civilian. The same day, a Burma military jet dropped 500lb bombs and shot rockets at Pi King Kaw Khu Village. Four were killed and many of the surrounding buildings were destroyed. One of the four was Mg Lin, who was working to take care of dead and wounded. Mg Lin previously worked with FBR, placed in charge of logistics and transportation in the Kone Thar and Loikaw battles.


The next day in southern Shan State, Moebye Township, a Burma Army drone dropped bombs on a KNDF (Karenni National Defense Force) outpost. The bombs directly hit the bunker, killing one and wounding two.
